Thanksgiving is upon us, and what could be more traditional than a home-cooked meal prepared in your very own driveway?
For some, the idea of a deep fried turkey might seem a bit too risky to try.
But for people who have tasted how delicious this method of cooking can be, there’s no going back. Just be sure not to end up starring in your own YouTube video.
And while you’re at it, pick up a pair of deep frying gloves to protect your paws, just in case.
How to Deep Fry a Turkey:
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- 3 gallons peanut oil for frying
- 1 (12 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed
- 1/4 cup Creole seasoning (mix of paprika, dried oregano, black pepper, dried basil, kosher salt, cayenne pepper, granulated onion, dried thyme and garlic powder)
- 1 white onion
Steps to Make Deep-Fried Turkey:
- In a large turkey fryer, heat oil to 400°F (200°C). Leave room for the turkey, or the oil will spill over.
- Rinse turkey, and thoroughly pat dry with paper towels.
- Rub Creole seasoning over turkey. Make sure the hole at the neck is open at least 2 inches so the oil can flow freely through the bird.
- Place the whole onion and turkey in drain basket, neck first
- Slowly lower basket into hot oil to completely cover turkey.
- Maintain the temperature of the oil at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and cook turkey for 3 1/2 minutes per pound, about 45 minutes.
- Carefully remove basket from oil, and drain turkey.
- Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh; the internal temperature must be 180°F (80°C).
- Finish draining turkey on the prepared platter.
